Breaking barriers: Interview with Securitas’ Evi Vanloo

Evi Vanloo shares how she cultivates her passion for people in the security industry, what's been central to her career growth, and advice for aspiring leaders.

In this edition, meet Evi Vanloo, head of people, sustainability, and communication for Global Clients. Prior to her current role, she served as regional program director at Securitas for a major global client, responsible for implementing talent development programs and helping to establish one of the most diverse leadership teams across the client’s global business. Her focus then was building a people-based strategy that was centered on diversity and inclusion, recognition and rewarding, talent acquisition, corporate social responsibility, and people development to deliver excellent and aligned services to the client.

Evi’s success in that role led to her promotion in 2023. Today, she is responsible not only for driving a people-based strategy for all of our Global Clients but supporting their sustainability efforts as well. Working with people and leading teams has always been Evi’s passion, and she helps inspire others every day to reach their full potential. Her advice for aspiring leaders: “Use your superpower and passion, stand up, and just do it.”

Q&A with Evi Vanloo

What led you to the security industry and what inspires you most about it?

I was working as a store manager in sports retail in 2016 when I felt I was ready for a change in my career. I began reflecting on what actually gave me energy and job satisfaction. What I was (and still am) passionate about was pretty clear: people. People management, working in teams, focusing on leadership – all of this was key for me to get the best out of myself.

I started a new role in the security industry as assistant branch manager, which I realized afterward was very ambitious! Luckily, I could rely on my people management and leadership experience, which were key factors in my success.

Security is a services industry where people play a crucial role. It – and in particular, Securitas – attracted me with the role we play in society: creating safer places everywhere around the world. I felt I could contribute something positive to society and felt very much connected to Securitas’ three values of integrity, vigilance, and helpfulness.

As a leader, what strategies do you employ to build and lead high-performing teams? How do you foster collaboration and create a positive work environment?

This is exactly what leadership is about. Fostering collaboration and creating a safe environment for everyone is key to leading high-performing teams. As a leader, you have to expect excellence, but the way you lead is most important. People sometimes forget that your own behavior influences how people perform.

The most powerful “strategy” is providing and asking for feedback (positive and constructive) and giving recognition for even the smallest achievements on a daily basis. Both feedback and recognition will set people up for success and automatically help create a more positive environment that’s conducive to collaboration. We should always strive to build a culture in which leadership, feedback, and learning are most valued.

How have others encouraged you throughout your career?

I always seek inspiration from role models – whether they’re people within the company, clients, or individuals I meet in my private life. Observing, listening, and taking advice and feedback have been pivotal in my growth. I’m fortunate to have met people who have believed in me, empowered me, and created opportunities for my success. They created space for me to grow in a safe environment. They definitely made a huge difference in my life and helped me get to where I am today.

How do you help other women to lead? What advice do you have for aspiring leaders?

Supporting and empowering women in leadership roles is essential and a shared responsibility. I've naturally supported many individuals in their careers by being approachable, open, and building trust. Recognizing their potential, passions, and experiences, and providing opportunities for growth and visibility has been key. Sharing credit for successes and failures, alike, in a safe environment fosters confidence and growth. Additionally, serving as a mentor or connecting women with mentors can significantly impact their career trajectories.

My advice for aspiring leaders: Build a network, find role models and mentors, and focus on making an impact. Embrace challenges without overthinking, leveraging your strengths and passions to drive change. Use your superpower and passion, stand up, and just do it.

How can the industry encourage more young women to pursue careers in security and technology?

One strategy that resonates with me is actively promoting and celebrating diversity and inclusion within the industry. Sharing stories of successful women in leadership roles, such as my own journey and others, can serve as powerful examples for young women considering careers in security and technology.

In addition, incorporating inclusive language and imagery in recruitment materials and employer branding efforts sends a clear message that women are valued and welcomed in the industry.

And, as I've mentioned, creating a safe and supportive workplace where individuals can fail and learn together is essential. The security industry offers a lot of opportunities for women across all levels and positions, and these actions can help shine a light on this amazing field.
